Finding Our Voices Through Creative Writing

Over the past few weeks, the Sparrow Group has been getting creative by taking part in a writing course led by our lovely facilitator, Tash.

Across two sessions, the group came together to explore thoughts, memories, and feelings through writing. For many, it was a chance to try something new, reflect on personal experiences, and even share pieces of their own stories with others.

One of the highlights was a poem written by group member Cheryl:
The Escape
As I sit, thinking back to the time I was a fisherman at sea,
Working on the fisher riggs, my bare feet feeling the pebbles, the hard, rough stone shore.
Using the rope for making net to catch fish, for my wife, for her to cook.
Where we would sit and have our tea, with our children at our feet.
I miss the escape, the sea air. Feeling free.
My time, just for me. I wish I could turn the clock back and go through it all again,
For my wife and me.
Cheryl’s poem resonated with the group, painting a vivid picture of life by the sea and a deep emotional connection to simpler, meaningful moments. It’s a reminder of how writing can help us revisit memories and express what matters through a creative outlet.
A big thank you to Tash for guiding us through such a positive experience—and to everyone in the Sparrow Group for taking part so openly.
